But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. (1 John 1:9 NLT)
Once we are made right with God through His Son Jesus Christ the penalty of our sins is canceled in full forever. But, as His children we still sin at times and need the experience of His forgiveness for the sake of our fellowship with Him. This matter of “confess[ing] our sins” doesn’t concern our relationship with God...it concerns our closeness to God.
